Medicare History With a Twist

America's Turbulent Medicare History

Way back in 1945, Harry Truman sent a note to the Congress asking them to establish a national health insurance plan. This enraged the Congress who didn't like to be passed notes to – they liked to be asked politely, face-to-face, and their ass kissed while asking – a tradition that continues even now. So angered was the Congress that they wired Harry Truman's proposal in red tape for 20 years.

Then in 1965, President Lyndon Johnson could take the delay no more because the average American can take BS lying down for 20 years and that's it. So, Lyndon Johnson asked the Congress to take a flying f*ck and he introduced Medicare and Medicaid. Because Lyndon Johnson wanted to have the first benefits of Medicare, he fixed the premiums at a beggarly $3 and he bought loads of plans and gifted them to all his senior relations.

Not happy at being left out Federal employees and members of the Congress went on a go-slow agitation during 1965–1984, which was the time the American economy supported the cold war against Russia and funded Osama Bin Laden to take on the Russians in Afghanistan. Shucks! A terrorist was groomed just because Medicare was denied to a bunch of government guys! Whacko!

Then in 1989, pap smears were brought under the ambit of Medicare because American women were not satisfied with their husbands' performance in bed and they desired something more exciting and stiffer like a pap smear.

Then in the year 2000, the Medicare B premium was revised to $45.40 per month just because the Congress felt that this figure wasn't divisible by 13.
